The Finest Known 1787 Fugio Silver "New Haven Restrike" of the approximate 20 survived examples that exist today. Perhaps just 50 pieces originally produced in silver (per Horatio Rust, as noted in Q. David Bowers' 2009 work Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins). Both sides of this coin exhibit lovely rainbow colored toning that exhibits a bulls eye pattern from the rims to the centers. The most vivid colors are largely confined to the peripheries, while in the centers we see softer, pastel-tinged colors such as pink and apricot. Smooth and satiny throughout, with no significant blemishes to detract from sharply impressed devices. Finest certified at PCGS or NGC, and particularly important as a condition rarity since a fair number of silver "New Haven Restrikes" are worn or otherwise impaired from having been mishandled by earlier generations of collectors. Truly a stunning coin. Coins was recently acquired at the Stack's Bower's June Baltimore Auction at a price realized of $28,250.

The U.S. Assay Office $50 Gold "Slug" is a true Gold Rush Rarity. Unique in shape, this octagonal ingot is the most identified and popular gold pieces from one of the most historic periods in United States history, the California Gold Rush. Today there are less than 160 total U.S. Assay Office $50 .887 fine gold pieces believed to exist today. Most coins have either been lost or melted down over the last 150 years. Another factor contributing to the overall rarity of this coin is that the U.S. Assay Office was re-organized late in 1852 and produced the $50 gold pieces during the last part of the year.
The U.S. Assay Office $50 "Slug" is very seldom seen for sale, most examples are kept in private collections rather than being traded. We are proud to offer this premium quality AU50 example. This almost uncirculated example has amazing eye appeal for the grade, original deep gold coloring, and still has the high relief of lettering that you would see in higher grades. One word describes this well-preserved artifact, Impressive.
